Sleeping Pad R-Values

ASTM FF4430 R-Values

Since January 1st 2020, sleeping pad producers have to label their sleeping pads with a new R-Value according to the new method declared by ASTM FF3340.

We have gathered all of the sleeping pads and present their new R-value besides their old R-value so that you can compare their performance.

Why does it matter?

It matters because:

Before ASTM FF3340, sleeping pad manufacturers measured their sleeping pads’ R-Values in different ways. For you as a customer, it was virtually worthless comparing the R-Value of e.g. a Thermarest sleeping pad to a SeaToSummit sleeping pad.

Now, all manufacturers have to use the same method and the same equipment when measuring their R-Values, so that you as a customer can compare the R-Value between different brands.

What does ASTM FF4430 mean for sleeping pads?

ASTM FF3340 is a new standard test method to decide the thermal resistance of camping mattresses and sleeping pads. It’s set by the organisation ASTM International and was rolled out 2020-01-01.
